The
Ice Canyon, Flaming Cliffs and Sanddunes: Highlights of
the South Gobi
With Khongorin Els! |
Day
1: You will be picked up at your accommodation in
UB and transferred to the airport for an early morning
flight to the Gobi desert.
From the Gobi airport, drive into “Goviin Gurvan Saihan”
(The three beauties of the Gobi) National Park and visit “Yolin
Am” (the Vulture’s Mouth) ice canyon. The area consists of
an oasis, attracting wildlife from all around the area for
grazing and drinking. The highlight of this valley is the
ice remaining inside the canyon until August every year,
surviving the desert heat to form what is better known as
the “Gobi Glacier”. Overnight in a ger camp close to Yolin
Am.
Day 2: After breakfast, head to the
Hongoryn Els – a vast and dramatic area of sand dunes to the
north west. The dune heights vary but can get as high as 300
m in parts with the range stretching over 100 kms. Locals
refer to the area as the singing sands, as the shifting of
such vast amounts of sand in the wind creates a noise which
can be described as distant singing. The area is best
observed at sunset or sunrise, so you will stay at a ger
camp in that area to allow you to soak up the atmosphere of
this vast natural phenomenon.
Day 3: Drive to “The Flaming Cliffs”, (“Bayan
Zag”) made of red sand stone, which during sunset seem to be
on fire. The name of the area actually refers to its
richness of saxaul forest but is more commonly known for its
cliffs of red sand stone. The cliffs are known as one of the
world’s biggest Dinosaur’s graveyards and until today,
fossils of dinosaur’s bones can be found in the area. From
the cliffs you will head back to your ger camp near Yolin
Am.
Day 4: Flights usually leave the Gobi mid
morning, leaving you just enough time for breakfast and your
drive to the local airport. Your flight returns to UB around
noon. You will be picked up from the airport and transferred
to your accommodation in UB.
